Sunset Mt. Baker Elopement at Artist Point & Ptarmigan Ridge
As a Washington elopement photographer, I get to meet couples from all over the country who travel here for our incredible landscapes. When Logan and Cheyenne told me they were traveling all the way from Minnesota for their big day, I couldn't wait to show them around!
This was their very first time in Washington, and they specifically chose a North Cascades elopement because they wanted an experience that felt rugged and uncrowded — something you can see throughout my Washington elopement portfolio. They made the most of their trip, too. In the days before their Mt. Baker elopement, they explored the Olympic Peninsula, visited some of my favorite spots in Bellingham, and even hiked Golden Ears across the border in BC the day before our session.
So when we met up at the Artist Point trailhead in early afternoon, Logan and Cheyenne were deep into their Pacific Northwest elopement journey and beyond excited to finally tie the knot!
An Unforgettable Ceremony Beneath Mt. Shuksan
We started the session with a short hike up the Artist Point trail. Cheyenne and Logan had brought matching backpacks and were wearing their wedding clothes, and they got lots of compliments from other hikers on the way up.
It only took a few minutes to reach one of my favorite spots in the North Cascades: a secluded alpine lake around Huntoon Point with spectacular views of Mt. Shuksan and Table Mountain. I’d been here several times before, including for Alison and Mark’s Artist Point wedding ceremony with family and Katherine and Adam’s Artist Point elopement, and it just never disappoints.
The air was hazy with wildfire smoke, but all the mountains of the North Cascades were still clearly visible. In fact, I thought the smoke added to the magic of the session — it softened the afternoon sun and gave us warm, diffuse lighting for the entirety of Logan and Cheyenne’s ceremony. As an adventure wedding photographer, I often find that unpredictable mountain conditions end up creating the most breathtaking photos.
Logan and Cheyenne were absolutely blown away by the scenery and their enthusiasm was contagious. After a few warm-up photos, they stood right in front of Mt. Shuksan to read their vows and exchange rings.
And then, nature decided to join in. Right in the middle of their ceremony, a massive chunk of icefall broke off the Curtis Glacier, echoing and rumbling as it fell down the mountain. Cheyenne stopped mid-vow just to exclaim how cool it was! It was such a beautiful, emotional ceremony, and Cheyenne couldn't hold back tears. Getting to witness couples like this so deeply in love is exactly what makes being a Mt. Baker elopement photographer so great.
A First Dance and Golden Hour on Ptarmigan Ridge
With golden hour fast approaching, we packed up our things and hiked over to Ptarmigan Ridge. Cheyenne and Logan were very excited to be so close to Mt. Baker at sunset, and the lighting was shaping up to make their Ptarmigan Ridge elopement incredibly memorable.
When we arrived, Cheyenne had a few items with her to make the day their own. First, she pulled out a paper fortune she kept tucked in her phone case that read “August will bring you love.” It was a warm August evening, and the fortune couldn’t have been more apt. Then she pulled a small speaker out of her backpack for their first dance, and she and Logan shared a beautiful first dance surrounded by peaks. It was the kind of magical moment that makes a Washington mountain elopement so special.
We wrapped up the evening watching the sun turn a fiery red as it dropped towards the horizon. Once it had fully set, we hiked back to the trailhead by twilight and made it before we even needed to pull out headlamps. Walking back under the fading alpenglow, I couldn't imagine a better way for these two to begin their next chapter.
